CDE Integration Comparison: The Complete Guide for AECO Project Teams
Comparing CDE integration tools for your AECO project? This guide covers CDE Sync, Bentley BECS, IMAGINiT Clarity, Workato, Autodesk Replication, and custom development side by side.
Choosing the right CDE integration approach is one of the more consequential technology decisions on a large infrastructure, transport, or energy project. Get it right and your supply chain stays in sync, your metadata stays clean, and your document control team spends their time on quality rather than manual transfer. Get it wrong and you spend the life of the project managing the fallout.
This guide compares the main options currently available to AECO project teams across the capabilities that matter most.
Why CDE Integration Is Hard
The core problem is fragmentation. Infrastructure projects routinely involve three, four, or five different CDE platforms across their supply chain. Each platform has its own metadata schema, its own versioning logic, its own workflow states, and its own API behaviour. Moving documents between these platforms correctly, preserving version control, transforming metadata, and maintaining compliance, requires platform-specific domain knowledge that general-purpose tools do not have.
The options for solving this problem fall into five categories: Bentley BECS, IMAGINiT Clarity, general integration platforms like Workato or Zapier, the Autodesk Replication Tool, and custom development. CDE Sync is a sixth option and the only one purpose-built for cross-vendor CDE synchronisation across the full AECO platform landscape.
Platform Coverage
Platform coverage is the first filter. If a tool cannot connect the platforms your project actually uses, everything else is irrelevant.
Bentley BECS supports Bentley platforms only. IMAGINiT Clarity supports Autodesk platforms only. The Autodesk Replication Tool supports Autodesk only. Workato and Zapier can connect to a small number of CDEs through generic API connectors, but without domain-specific logic. Custom development can theoretically connect anything, but each new platform requires a new development scope.
CDE Sync currently supports Autodesk Forma, Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM360, Microsoft SharePoint, InEight, Oracle Aconex, Bentley ProjectWise, Procore, Asite, 12D Synergy, and Trimble Connect. It is the only commercially available product that covers all four of the dominant enterprise CDEs simultaneously.
Deployment and Setup
Deployment complexity is a practical differentiator that is often underestimated at the evaluation stage.
IMAGINiT Clarity requires virtual machines, host servers, and task servers. Typical implementation time is one to five months. Bentley BECS requires technical configuration and vendor involvement. Custom development timelines range from four to eighteen months. Workato and Zapier can be configured more quickly for simple integrations but require significant scripting work to handle CDE-specific requirements.
CDE Sync deploys through a no-code browser-based wizard with no infrastructure provisioning required. First synchronisation typically runs within 15 to 30 minutes of configuration starting.
Security and Compliance
Security requirements vary by project type, but on government, critical infrastructure, and joint venture projects, they are usually stringent and non-negotiable.
CDE Sync holds SOC 2 Type II certification as a product, verified through independent audit by Accorp via CyberPulse, with annual penetration testing and disaster recovery simulation. This certification covers the product itself, not just the underlying cloud infrastructure. Files are never stored or cached. They stream directly between platforms, with only encrypted credentials and sync logs retained.
Bentley BECS and IMAGINiT Clarity do not hold product-specific SOC 2 Type II certification. Their security posture is inherited from their parent organisations. Custom development typically has no security certification. Workato holds platform-level SOC 2 certification, but individual sync workflows are not certified.
AECO Domain Logic
Domain logic is where purpose-built tools separate most clearly from general-purpose alternatives.
ISO 19650 metadata validation, version control rules, transmittal compliance logic, and platform-specific workflow mapping are native to CDE Sync. They are not configuration tasks for the customer. Bentley BECS and IMAGINiT Clarity each handle domain logic, but only within their own vendor ecosystems. Workato and Zapier have no AECO domain logic. Custom development can implement domain logic, but it needs to be designed, built, and maintained by the development team.
Pricing Model
CDE Sync supports both individual project pricing and enterprise pricing. Pricing is available at utopiadigital.io/cde-syncs-pricing. Bentley BECS and Autodesk Replication are enterprise-priced. IMAGINiT Clarity is project-based, with enterprise setups requiring additional VM provisioning costs. Custom development costs range from $500,000 to $2,000,000 USD to build, with ongoing maintenance on top.
Which Option Is Right for Your Project
If your project runs entirely within a single Bentley environment and you need to connect to Bentley downstream systems, BECS is worth evaluating.
If your project runs entirely within Autodesk and you have the IT infrastructure and implementation runway, Clarity is a known option.
If your project involves multiple CDE vendors, operates under ISO 19650, requires SOC 2 Type II compliance, or needs to be operational quickly, CDE Sync is the only commercially available product that addresses all of those requirements simultaneously.
