Beyond the Autodesk Ecosystem: Why Teams Are Looking for an Autodesk Replication Tool Alternative
The Autodesk Replication Tool works within Autodesk. When your project involves ProjectWise, Aconex, or other platforms, you need something broader. Here is what to look for.
The Autodesk Replication Tool does what it says. It replicates data within the Autodesk ecosystem, primarily enabling ACC hub-to-hub transfers and certain one-way synchronisation workflows between Autodesk environments. For organisations running a single Autodesk stack across all their projects, it solves a real problem.
The constraint is the name itself. It replicates Autodesk data to Autodesk environments. Once your project extends beyond that boundary, the tool reaches its limit.
The One-Way Problem
Autodesk's replication functionality is predominantly one-directional. It can push data from one ACC hub to another, but it is not designed for the bidirectional, continuous synchronisation that live infrastructure projects require. When two teams on the same project need their CDEs to stay in sync in real time, with changes flowing in both directions, the Replication Tool is not architected for that use case.
The Ecosystem Boundary Problem
The majority of large infrastructure projects involve supply chains with mixed CDE environments. A principal contractor may require all submissions into Autodesk Construction Cloud. One of their tier-one subcontractors may run Bentley ProjectWise. The project owner may require a copy of all documents in Oracle Aconex for asset handover.
None of these cross-platform flows are possible with the Autodesk Replication Tool. Each one requires either a separate integration product or manual transfer.
The Metadata Problem
Even within Autodesk environments, the Replication Tool does not perform metadata transformation. It moves files, but it does not translate metadata between different schema configurations within the Autodesk ecosystem. On projects with complex document naming conventions or custom metadata fields, this creates gaps that require manual remediation.
How CDE Sync Extends What the Replication Tool Cannot
CDE Sync supports eleven platforms. For teams currently using the Autodesk Replication Tool for ACC-to-ACC workflows, CDE Sync handles that use case and extends it to every cross-platform scenario the Replication Tool cannot reach.
The metadata mapping engine handles schema transformation between platforms automatically. Synchronisation is bidirectional. Files stream directly between platforms without being stored. SOC 2 Type II certification applies to the product itself, not just the underlying infrastructure.
For organisations on Autodesk looking to standardise on a single integration platform that covers their full supply chain, CDE Sync removes the need to run the Replication Tool for some workflows and a separate solution for everything else.
